Senate committee demands action on internet slowdown within two weeks

Mobile network operators are experiencing disruption owing to a technical issue, while Wi-Fi services are unaffected, according to the IT ministry.

On Thursday, the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology gave officials a two-week deadline to resolve many problems with social media disruptions and internet access. A thorough report on the financial effects of these disruptions is what the committee is looking for.

The choice was made at a meeting in which committee members emphasized the serious consequences that social media and internet outages have for Pakistani enterprises.

Officials from the IT ministry and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) participated in the meeting, which was facilitated by Senator Palwasha Khan of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The substantial losses to e-commerce companies have angered Senator Afnan Ullah Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who estimated that the losses will amount to at least Rs500 million.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senator Muhammad Humayun Mohmand chastised the government and warned that the slowdown hurt jobs and company investments. "You've put people's employment at danger. The entire industry would be destroyed if this keeps up, he said.

Aisha Humera Chaudhry, secretary of the IT ministry, responded by claiming that Wi-Fi services are not affected by the outage and attributing it to a potential technical fault impacting mobile network operators. But the PTA representative asserted that they had not heard any complaints regarding the poor services.

The absence of PTA officials caused the committee to postpone its anticipated discussion on firewall issues. The purpose of this in-camera session was to shed light on firewall features, which are thought to include new filters designed to regulate social media material.

Prior to this, the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan said that heightened security measures had caused a 30%–40% decrease in internet speeds.

This has had a serious effect on people and businesses that depend on dependable internet connectivity. The new internet firewall, which is intended to monitor and block particular online information, is being tested, which is the reason for the disturbance.
