Because the three ports are so widely spread out and because Russia has stepped up its missile attacks, the leader of Ukraine's Odesa region has said that it is "not possible" to completely secure them.
He was speaking to the BBC following the deaths of a man, two women, and a 16-year-old child in a Russian strike on a two-story building northwest of Odesa.
Oleh Kiper, the regional director, stated that "probably a ballistic missile was targeting an infrastructure facility, but it hit nearby instead - into this place." This was the fourth attack of this kind on the Black Sea coastal region in five days.
Regarding its wave of missile attacks, Russia has remained silent. Nine more individuals perished in an early attack on a cargo ship.
Ballistic missile attacks on the ports of Odesa have occurred previously. But never this many, so soon after one another.
Oleksiy Kuleba, the deputy prime minister, claimed that in only three months, Russia had launched 60 such attacks that had destroyed or seriously damaged about 300 port infrastructure. He reported that 22 civilian vessels had been hit and 79 individuals had been killed or injured.
Oleh Kiper informed the BBC that because the three ports in the Odesa region stretched over around 80 km (50 miles), Odesa's present air defenses were unable to cover them all. Thus, the city of Odesa, which is home to nearly a million people, is the primary emphasis. The situation is still challenging for the remaining ports and communities.
Since the ports in the districts of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Mykolayiv in Ukraine are no longer in use, Odesa's facilities are now more crucial than ever to Ukrainian exports.
According to him, Russia is currently striking civilian vessels in order to undermine Ukraine's economy and terrify the rest of the world.
As a result of their attacks on the ships at Odesa, Kiper claimed that the ship owners and insurance firms would not come into our ports or the war zone.
A well-known Ukrainian journalist who documented life under occupation in Crimea and eastern Ukraine has passed away while being held in Russian custody, according to the prosecutor general of Ukraine, who has announced the start of criminal procedures.
